Join the Team- What you need to know
What is the UC Waterski Team? The UC Waterski Team is a club sport at the University of Cincinnati. The team skis from April through October, competing on the National level September through October at collegiate tournaments.
Who can join? Anyone who attends the University of Cincinnati can join the team. The team is open to both men and women who want to waterski. We have members of ALL ability levels. Most people who join the team are recreational skiers looking to improve their skills.
How much does it cost? Dues are $150 a quarter. These go towards gas for practices, coaching fees, boat fees, site fees, tournament entry fees, discounted price on houseboat trip, discount on team apparel, all-paid team recruiting events.
What do I need? Equipment - You do NOT need your own equipment. The team has gear that is there for people to use. USA Waterski Membership - In order to ski with the team you will need to purchase a USA Water Ski membership for $40. This is a yearly membership that offers you insurance in case anything happens to you while you are skiing at Extreme Watersports or any other Tournament Ski Lake. Skiers must have this to ski with the team. For instructions on how to obtain this membership, click here. Click on the new member section under OPTION 1. Choose under 25 active ($40). On next screen, make sure to select University Of Cincinnati for Club/Team and then 3-event for Sports Discipline.
What are the ability levels? No prior skiing ability is required to join the team. We welcome skiers of any level, and encourage those who are interested in learning how to ski to join the team.
How do you compete?
Collegiate tournaments are fun for everyone of all ability levels. Tournaments start the first weekend in September putting Regionals around the last weekend in September and Nationals in October (if we qualify). A collegiate tournament consists of 3-events: Slalom - Trick - Jump. Each collegiate team fields an "A Team" which is the Top 5 men's skiers and Top 5 women's skiers in each event. It's possible to make the "A Team" in one, two, or three events. The "A Team" scores count towards the Overall Team Score. Skiers who do not make the "A Team" in any event can ski on the "B Team". "B Team" skiers are scored individually, however their scores do not count towards the Overall Team Score.
When does the team ski? The team skis every Monday night at Extreme Watersports Center in Newtown from April to October. Additional water time is had at other sites such as the Ohio River, Licking River, and other lakes around the Cincinnati Area.
What UC Waterski Team has to offer? Private Practice Facility - The UC Waterski Team practices on a private site 20 minutes from campus. The two lake site has 3 slalom courses and a jump. Boats - The team has a 2005 Malibu Response LXi that is used for Jumping and Trick. The team also uses a brand new Promo Malibu Response LXi for slalom so the team can stay up to date on the changing technology. Team Equipment Trailer - The team has their own equipment trailer that all gear is kept in and locked up. Team Suburban - The team has their own Chevy Suburban that is available to tow the team boat to any lake or river for additional practices. Coaches - The team has multiple dedicated coaches that help the team in each of the three events. All coaches specialize in slalom, trick, and/or jump and are capable of working with skiers of ALL ability levels. Houseboat Trips - The team holds at least one annual houseboat trip every May to Dale Hollow Lake in southern Kentucky. Many of the trips are held in conjunction with other waterski teams from around the Midwest. This is one event that you don't want to miss! Lucky Lowe Ski School - Every December over Christmas Break the team heads south to Lucky Lowe's Ski School located just south of Orlando, FL. Lucky is a retired pro skier who specializes in slalom, trick, and jump. It's a great trip to get away, do some skiing, and get some great coaching. Discounted Ski Gear - The team has a sponsorship with No Wake Marine in Cincinnati, OH and is also sponsored by HO Sports. Each of these companies give discounts to ski team members on equipment.
Does the Team offer Scholarships? As with other midwest waterski teams, we currently do not offer any waterski specific scholarships, HOWEVER there are a number of scholarships through the University of Cincinnati for which you may be eligible and mentioning that you're a top level skier looking to compete on behalf of the University will look good on your scholarship application!
